My Princess Phone
The first time I got a phone (and a private phone number of my own) in my room, I just got a plain old black rotary phone. Later, during the summer of 79, my mom allowed me to pic out new decor for my room and she redid the whole, entire thing. That was the first time I had ever had a beautifully matched and decorated bedroom. I was so proud of it and I used to stand in my doorway and just stare at it. It looked like a page out of a catalog. She let me pick everything myself and so of course, I picked all blue. I had a beautiful blue w/white trim lacy bedspread with matching sham. I got a brand new room-sized carpet (blue, of course). I got brand new blue velvet curtains and a new blue and white lamp. I also got a brand new bed and dresser set. I bought some really nice, beautiful inspirational/music posters to go on my walls (lots of rainbows, water, etc.) and a few other little knick knacks that matched. I already had a nice stereo system and a good record/tape organizer. So when my mom and I got finished decorating it looked super nice. I was very, very proud of it. The only remaining mismatched piece of the puzzle was that old black rotary phone. I was happy just to have it. Very few of my friends had phones in their bedrooms and even fewer had their own private phone lines. So I didn't complain. But my sweet mama noticed that the black phone didn't match and so she surprised me by arranging for me to make a switch. On July 23, 1978, my mom, L., and I went down to the Southwestern Bell office where my mom traded my black phone for a brand new sky blue, push button princess phone. I was so, so excited. It perfectly completed the decor of my bedroom and looked very nice setting on the table beside of my bed with my digital alarm clock (also pretty new as I got it the previous Christmas). I so wish that we had gotten some pictures of it because I loved that little room more than I can tell you. The fact that I had a mismatched room up to that point never really bothered me all that much. When you're a kid, your room is your room and you usually love it. I always loved my rooms, even though they were kind of a jumbled mess and ALWAYS way too small. But when my mom surprised me by redecorating, I loved it far more than I had known that I would. I couldn't wait to show it to my friends. I still get choked up thinking about that room and the summer memories that my mom and I made putting it together. Those were special times for sure.
My sweet mama. Always going the extra mile, spoiling me rotten, just because she loves me. You will never know just how much I love and appreciate you, Mama. Oh my, how I do love you.
*note: The reason I remember the specific date that I got my new phone is because that's the same day that Rsol called to say that he was leaving to take a teaching job in another city. Broke my heart in a billion pieces. Up to that point, he was by far the best teacher I had ever had. Man, I had fun in his class. We're still close friends today and he's still hilarious.
Rsol and me at Montage the year I took over the position he had held years ago when my dream began. He was my inspiration for becoming a vocal music teacher so having him there the year it all came full circle was a priceless gift that only God could have caused to come to fruition.
