Hot Rollers
As a rule, I hated having my hair rolled. My mom used to roll my hair and she did a good job but she wound the curlers so tightly on my head that it hurt. I would get an instant bad headache and my scalp would hurt. Wearing curlers was, to me, like having an elephant sit on top of your head and pull as hard as he could. I HATED it and my sweet mama would make me wear them for hours. Rather than blow drying my hair, she would make me allow it to air dry. That took for.ever. UGH! My head hurts now just thinking about it. Of course, my mama didn't mean to hurt me. She just didn't realize how uncomfortable the curlers were. No harm done. I survived. lol But once I got old enough to rebel, I swore off curlers for good (almost).
My cousins, Pat and Rhonda, were basically my "big girl" role models. They practically lived with us when I was little. Both of them were older than I was. Rhonda was in elementary school when I was just a preschooler, while Pat was already in high school. So they were always bringing their cool tween and teen stuff over to our house and because I idolized them, I always thought all of their girl gear was incredibly fascinating. Hot rollers are an item that Pat got one year. She loved to roll her hair with hot rollers so she would bring them over to our house often. I hated curlers but I thought Pat looked way cool sitting there rolling her own hair with her own rollers. Sometimes she would either roll my hair (just for a few minutes, which is all I could stand) or let me play with them and roll my own hair, which always resulted in a mess. I still didn't like rollers but like all little kids, I liked playing with anything that made me feel grown-up so I liked our hot roller sessions. lol
For my children, who are probably unfamiliar with hot rollers.....the round container plugged into the wall and heated up just like curling irons do today. The rollers went inside of the round canister. Once they were adequately heated. a little light would go off, letting you know that they were ready to be used. The curlers got VERY hot and they burned your fingers. Also, included in the set was a set of wire clips that were used to hold the curlers in place on your head. Very stylish, but also very cumbersome and uncomfortable. I am so thankful for the invention of curling irons, which made curlers almost obsolete.
*note - I don't know whether or not this is the same exact brand of rollers that Pat owned.
