The Three Bears
This is the first full book I ever read. During the second semester of 1st grade, after we had completely finished the entire Fun With Dick and Jane reader, our teacher decided that it was time for us to read a full regular book for the very first time! That was a big, big deal. Up to that point, we had only read out of our school reading book.
Almost since birth, our parents had read to us out of the Little Golden Book series but we had never been able to read the books ourselves. None of us had yet begun to realize how far we had come as readers, so when Mrs. Higginbotham passed these books out to us, we were just sure that this was going to be a scary, tough learning task. But it wasn't at all! We could actually read it! Even the words that were new, were readable because we had learned how to use phonetics to sound them out! I remember being SOOOO excited. I couldn't wait to read the whole thing and I couldn't want to go home and tell my mom that I could read a REAL BOOK! lolol
My other recollection relating to this book is that Mrs. Higginbotham chose to introduce it to us late on a Friday afternoon. In first grade, you have to read along with the class so we weren't allowed to read the whole thing all at once. We were only allowed to begin the book and read the first couple of pages before putting them away for the weekend. I remember being so frustrated because I had to wait a whole entire WEEKEND before I could get my hands on that new "grown-up" book again! lol
I miss the days when learning was such an exciting adventure.
