Mustangs were definitely the coolest baby boomer car made. I had tons of toy Mustangs and I dreamed of owning a real one when I was old enough to drive. I've never stopped loving those 60's era Mustangs and have long hoped that I would one day be able to purchase one that has been fully restored, and maybe technologically updated on the inside (cd player, etc. which were not a part of the original vehicle). However, I saw a news story about the cars a few years ago and in that report, I learned troubling information regarding an alleged design flaw. According to the report, the gas tank, near the rear of the vehicle, is easily ignited in rear-end collisions, making the 60's era Mustang a potentially deadly bomb, even when involved in otherwise minor accidents. Supposedly the entire car will explode on impact because of the poorly planned placement of the gas tank. The reason the report was done in the first place is because the Ford Motor Company allegedly knew, when they put the car on the market, that it was a deadly accident waiting to happen. I'm not car expert so I can't say for sure whether or not the reported claims are true but unless I am able to come up with trustworthy proof that the report is inaccurate, I will sadly be forced to put my Mustang dreams on hold. I've dreamed of being many things in life but charbroiled is not one of them. : )
