Locust Hunting
My best friend, Reena and I used to go out almost every afternoon during the summer to hunt locusts. They were in all of the trees and bushes around our neighborhood so there were always plenty to be found. We usually didn't try to keep them. We would just catch them, enjoy our victory for a few moments by carrying our catch around and petting them a bit, before finally setting them free. I think locusts have evolved a bit because they don't stay down as low on the trees as they used to. They're a lot harder to reach around here these days but anytime she or I do happen to run across one, we STILL can't resist the urge to reach out and grab it.
The sound of locusts in the trees was a big part of my Oklahoma summers. I love to go outside just before dark to listen to that sound as it instantly takes me back to the summers of my childhood when staying out after dark to play hide-and-seek was a perfect way to cap off a perfect day.
