60's Pop Culture and Those Ugly, Ugly Pants
Bell bottoms were very popular when I was a kid. The pants in the picture above were the super bell bottoms that were called "elephant ears". They flared out extra wide at the bottom. We all loved wearing them. Looking back, I have no idea why. They were butt ugly. And as though the wide-bottomed, hip-hugger cut wasn't bad enough, a lot of pants were also covered with wild patterns such as the ones you see in this picture. The 60's were the annoyingly sinful "make love, not war" flower child years. Because of that, peace signs, cartoonish lettering, and smiley faces were plastered on just about everything in sight, including our clothes. I remember really liking those things as a child but I am grateful for the fact that such cultural influence on fashion disappeared with the 70's because my adult perspective cringes when I realize just how ugly all of the clothes of that time period really were.
